What Is TMJ Physiotherapy?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint—the hinge-like joint that connects your jaw to your skull. It plays a vital role in chewing, speaking, and facial movement. When the TMJ becomes irritated, inflamed, or misaligned, it can lead to a range of symptoms known as TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders).

Common symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Ear pain or fullness
  • Facial pain or tightness
  • Limited jaw opening
  • Neck or shoulder tension

At our Scarborough TMJ physiotherapy clinic, we treat these symptoms using a combination of techniques, including:

  • Manual Therapy: Soft tissue release, joint mobilizations, and intra-oral techniques to reduce muscle tension and restore joint movement.
  • Jaw Mobility Exercises: Gentle, progressive exercises to retrain jaw mechanics and improve range of motion.
  • Postural Correction: Targeting forward head posture and upper cervical dysfunction that often contribute to TMJ pain.
  • Neuromuscular Re-education: Helping your muscles relearn optimal movement patterns.
  • Relaxation & Stress Management: TMJ dysfunction is often linked to bruxism (teeth grinding), which can worsen under stress. We help address those underlying patterns, too.

The result? A targeted treatment plan that relieves your pain, restores jaw function, and helps prevent future flare-ups.

Our Unique Approach to TMJ Rehabilitation

At Body Works Physiotherapy, we believe TMJ dysfunction is not just a jaw issue—it’s a whole-body issue. That’s why our approach is both comprehensive and customized. We look beyond symptoms to uncover and correct the root causes.

Here’s what your care journey will look like:

  • Detailed History & Functional Intake: We take time to understand your symptoms, triggers, stress levels, sleep patterns, and dental history.
  • Jaw & Neck Assessment: We examine the TMJ joint, surrounding muscles, and upper spine to assess movement, alignment, and compensation patterns.
  • Intra-Oral & Extra-Oral Techniques: If needed and with your consent, we use gentle intra-oral techniques to release deep jaw muscles like the pterygoids.
  • Postural & Ergonomic Advice: We help correct habits that strain your jaw—like poor desk posture, phone use, or sleeping positions.
  • Progressive Exercise Plan: Your personalized home program will reinforce therapy sessions, helping you maintain results and improve function daily.

We walk beside you every step of the way—educating, supporting, and adjusting your plan as you heal.

TMJ Physiotherapy Scarborough FAQs

Reach out if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

Most clients start noticing relief within 3–5 sessions, but the timeline varies depending on the severity and duration of symptoms. Chronic cases or those with contributing factors like stress or posture may require more sessions over several weeks. Our goal is to create sustainable, long-term change rather than quick, temporary fixes.

Results improve when patients follow home exercises and lifestyle modifications consistently. We also monitor progress closely to adjust your treatment plan in real time, helping you recover as efficiently as possible without rushing or overlooking deeper causes.

No referral is needed to begin TMJ physiotherapy at Body Works Physiotherapy. However, we do welcome collaboration with your dentist, physician, or other practitioners if you’re already under care. Many of our clients come directly to us after noticing jaw discomfort, headaches, or tightness.

If your case involves complex dental or neurological factors, we may recommend a multidisciplinary approach. You’re always welcome to book a consultation to determine if physiotherapy is appropriate or to help guide further steps in your care.

While bruxism (teeth grinding) is a common cause, TMJ dysfunction can also stem from trauma (e.g., whiplash, falls), arthritis, connective tissue disorders, poor posture, emotional stress, or even imbalanced bite mechanics.

Sometimes it develops gradually due to repetitive movement patterns, sleep position, or overuse of one side of the jaw (e.g., chewing gum or favouring one side while eating). TMJ issues may also be linked to tension in the neck, shoulders, or upper back. That’s why we take a full-body approach during assessment and treatment.
