What Are Compression Stockings?

Compression stockings are designed to help prevent and guard against progression of venous (vein) disorders such as edema, phlebitis and thrombosis. These elastic stockings compress the limb, increasing blood flow to relieve heavy and aching legs. At Body Works , we have the trained staff available to create custom compression stockings that fit your specific requirements and needs.

How Do Our Compression Socks Help?

Compression stockings are thick clothing items that are made to reduce blood circulation to active muscles, in order to boost hypertrophy (increase in muscular tissue) as well as stop disuse atrophy (degeneration of muscle mass).

One of the most supported concepts of why compression socks treatment work is that restricted blood circulation develops local hypoxia which in turn deprives great metabolites of that location. Most importantly, these metabolites are not cleared out as quickly as a result of decreased blood circulation.

The strain produced by these compression socks is sufficient to occlude blood flow at 50-80% within the targeted muscle mass. While this might not sound right, the local hypoxia actually assists in the accumulation of more metabolites, in order to improve the body’s anabolic response system (the process by which the body gains muscle mass protein).

Basically, limiting the blood circulation in the targeted area helps in even more muscle protein production- also, consequently, assisting blood circulation a lot more effectively afterward. Some additional benefits of compression stockings may include regulating these physiological factors:

  • Enhancing growth factors.
  • Recruiting fast twitch fibre
  • Synthesis of muscle fibre
  • Stress proteins
  • Nitric oxide synthase
  • Decrease in myostatin expression

Frequently Asked Questions

Reach out if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

The basis of compression stockings is to help move your blood along from your feet and legs back through your heart. However, these are the more common conditions that it can help with.

  1. Deep vein thrombosis
  2. Lymphedema
  3. Varicose veins
  4. and even Pregnancy

Are you experiencing any of these instances? If yes, then compression socks are the answer!

  1. Sitting idle for long at work
Your calf muscles are also known as the “second heart” because they play a similar role as the heart by pumping continuously, allowing a steady flow of blood back to the heart. Unfortunately, sitting all day is not letting these muscles do enough work, which results in blood pooling in your lower legs.
  2. Standing for long periods
Walking is a great activity to let blood flow continuously by the use of calf muscles that work as a “muscle pump.” But when you keep standing in one place for a long time, this can negatively impact your muscles’ functioning.

So, people working as trade workers, retail employees, and hospitality staff are the ones who can benefit from compression socks the most.
  3. When you exercise
The use of compression socks helps in recovering after strenuous exercise and reduces swelling and muscle soreness. In addition, studies show that the use of compression socks during workout sessions and recovery can relieve muscle soreness, especially in the lower legs.
  4. When you are traveling
As mentioned earlier, being inactive for long hours can cause blood pooling in the lower legs. Sitting for a long time during a flight can increase the likelihood of developing deep vein thrombosis and blood clots. The use of compression stockings can help avoid this.

Our specialist team at Body Works Physiotherapy can design customized compression stockings depending on your needs. So whatever concerns you, we can help out!

Additionally, the following types of people can benefit from the use of compression socks:

  • People with or at risk for circulation problems, like deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, or diabetes
  • People who’ve just gotten surgery
  • Those who can’t leave their bed or have a hard time moving their legs
  • People who stand all day at work
  • Athletes
  • Pregnant women
  • People who spend long stretches of time on airplanes, like pilots
