What Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Your pelvic floor muscles act as a foundation for your core, supporting vital organs like your bladder, uterus, and bowel. When these muscles become tight, weak, or poorly coordinated, symptoms can show up as:

  • Bladder leaks, urgency, or frequency
  • Pelvic pain or discomfort
  • Pain during intimacy
  • Difficulty with bowel movements
  • Prolapse or heaviness in the pelvis
  • Postpartum recovery issues like core weakness or diastasis recti

At Body Works Physiotherapy Pickering, our pelvic floor physiotherapy services include:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: We begin with an in-depth conversation about your symptoms and medical history, followed by a physical exam (which may include an internal assessment with your consent).
  • Targeted Exercise Prescription: Exercises designed to gently strengthen or relax the pelvic floor muscles, tailored to your body’s specific needs.
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on treatment to reduce tension, improve muscle mobility, and relieve pain.
  • Breath & Core Coordination: Helping you integrate pelvic floor function into everyday movement for greater confidence and control.
  • Education & Support: Guidance on bladder health, bowel health, posture, and safe return to physical activity.

The result? A tailored program that helps you build strength, reduce pain, and feel empowered in your body again.

Our Unique Approach to Pelvic Health Rehabilitation

At Body Works Physiotherapy Pickering, we know that pelvic floor issues don’t exist in isolation—they affect your whole body and your whole life. That’s why we take a holistic, individualized approach to every case.

Here’s what sets us apart:

  • Thorough Initial Assessment: We listen carefully, taking time to understand your concerns, goals, and lifestyle.
  • Pelvic Floor Muscle Examination: If appropriate and with your consent, you will be examined both internally and externally to assess the tone, strength, and function of your pelvic floor muscles.
  • Postural & Breathing Analysis: Your posture, breathing patterns, and core function play a vital role in pelvic health, and we address them all.
  • Customized Treatment Plan: We develop a progressive plan designed to meet your goals safely and effectively.
  • Continuous Progress Monitoring: As your symptoms improve, your plan evolves to ensure lasting recovery.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Pickering, Ontario FAQs

Reach out if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move easily. While some parts of the assessment may involve internal examination (always with your consent), much of the session can include posture checks, movement testing, and guided exercises.

You may want to bring shorts or leggings for ease of movement. If an internal assessment is part of your treatment plan, you’ll be given privacy to change, and your therapist will explain everything clearly so you feel safe, informed, and comfortable throughout.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can develop from various factors, including pregnancy, childbirth, surgery, menopause, chronic straining (like with constipation), high-impact sports, heavy lifting, or even stress and trauma. Sometimes, there’s no obvious cause, and symptoms can appear gradually over time.

Both muscle overactivity (tightness) and underactivity (weakness) can create problems. That’s why an individualized assessment is so important — what works for one person may not help another. Our team carefully identifies your contributing factors to create a treatment plan that addresses your unique situation.

While exercises like Kegels are often recommended, they aren’t right for everyone—and doing them incorrectly can sometimes worsen symptoms. Pelvic floor physiotherapy helps you understand what your pelvic floor actually needs: strengthening, relaxation, coordination, or a combination.

Once assessed, we’ll give you safe, tailored exercises you can practice confidently at home. We also teach strategies for integrating these exercises into daily life, like during lifting, walking, or exercising. This guided approach ensures you’re supporting your recovery effectively, rather than guessing on your own.
